Chicken Rice @ Boon Tong Kee, River Valley Road, Singapore
>> Dec 20, 2010
Initially, I wanted to go to Chatterbox (Meritus Mandarin) to have their famous (or rather infamously priced chicken rice and lobster laksa). Alas, someone wanted to treat us. Hence being a very nice guest, we opted for a more reasonably priced chicken rice place.
A couple of years back, Malaysia had a dispute with Singapore over the origination of a couple of prominent hawker food (eg: Bak Kut Teh), I am not sure if chicken rice was on that list as well, but frankly, I can't be bothered. As long as the food taste good, who cares where it comes from.
This is my 2nd visit to Boon Tong Kee so far. This time round, we were seated on the ground floor. A waitress took our order. Service was quite efficient.
Dark Soy Sauce and Chili Sauce for the Chicken
The chili sauce differed a little from what we get back home. The chili sauce here was solely garlic, ginger and red chilies. I prefer my chicken rice chili slightly sourish, as served around KL.
Boiled Kampung Chicken
The chicken was served with some pickles on the side. The chicken was rather ordinary. They were quite stingy with the sauce.
Hong Kong Kai Lan with Oyster Sauce
The Kai Lan was boiled and then topped with oyster sauce and fried shallots. Nothing exceptional about this dish.
Seafood Claypot
The seafood claypot came with abalones, large scallops, giant prawns and fish bladder. Tastewise, it was rather similar to any random restaurant in KL that serves this dish. What impressed me was the quality of the ingredients used for the dish. I was rather impressed with the dish.
Rice cooked with Chicken Stock
The rice wasn't great. Texture wise, it wasn't fluffy and soft. In fact, I would say it leaned closer towards the hard side.
All in all, ordinary chicken rice at a slightly steeper price. The dinner came up to a total of SGD111.10. Frankly, I regretted not trying the chicken rice at MO. My conclusion is, ordinary chicken rice at a reasonable price.

its meritus mandarin, not mandarin oriental..
if you find the chicken in boon tong kee normal, the chatterbox chicken is actually worse..but the rice at chatterbox is much better.
then again, from what i hear from my sg fren, the quality amongst the BTKs varies quite a bit.
@Joe: thanks for pointing that out. I've just changed it. I always had that impression that chatterbox's CR was the best in sg. I haven't been there before though. I guess I'm probably wrong then.. haha
But Tian Tian was good. I dare say even better than most of Malaysian chicken rice. :)
Anyway, good to see you've migrated to dotcom as well.
@J2Kfm: the pictures on their website certainly looks good man.. Yea, I recently migrated.. haha, wanted to do so quite some time ago, just couldn't find the time to do it till now..
